Egami | Kawanabe | Dow | Ito | Heyden

(1912-1981)

Was from 1957, President and Chief Instructor of the Shotokan of the Japan Karate-do Shotokai until his death in 1981. Born in 1912, in Fukuoka prefecture, he began practicing karate while a student at Waseda University, whose karate club he helped to establish. In 1937, he was appointed by Gichin Funakoshi to Shotokan's committee for evaluation; after the II World War, he studied under Master Funakoshi and assisted him in teaching. Taught karate at Gakushuin, Toho and Chuo Universities. He was the instructor of Masters Sodo Kawanabe and Mitsusuke Harada.

SODO KAWANABE SENSEI

Graduated from Waseda University. In his lifelong studies of Karate, he studied four years together with Harada sensei and Ohshima sensei. Was the Waseda Karate Club Captain in 1953, after Ohshima sensei. Direct student of Master Funakoshi and assistant of Master Egami. In 1958 he founded the Shotokai Kawanabe Dojo in Atsugi, Japan. Master Kawanabe is an advisor of the Chile Shotokai Karate Budo.

MARSHALL M. DOW SENSEI

Started his karate studies in Atsugi, Japan in 1960, under Master Sodo Kawanabe. He received a Shihan title directly from Mr. S. Kawanabe in 1982. Founded the U.S. Shotokai Kawanabe Karate-do in Tucson, Arizona, U.S.A. In 1985, he founded the Shotokai Kumayama Dojo. He is an advisor to Shotokai Karate Budo.

TOMEJI ITO SENSEI

Born in 1926, studied directly under Harada sensei. In 1970 he founded his own Karate-do Organization, The Ito Shotokan Karate Association. In 1989 he

founded the Butokukai Karate-do Association. At the moment he lives in Sao Paulo, Brazil, from where he directs the activities of his numerous dojos in Brazil. The is an advisor of the Chilean Shotokai Organization.

HUMBERTO HEYDEN SENSEI

Started his martial arts studies in Karate-do in 1963. Received his Shodan degree in 1969. In the early seventies he traveled to Brazil, where he studied under Ito sensei. In 1974 received the title of Kyoshi (instructor) from Sodo Kawanabe sensei, that same year he founded the Shotokai Chile Organization. Official representative in Chile of Shotokai Kawanabe, Japan. South American representative of Shotokai Kumayama USA.
